Teachers in today’s classrooms need to be familiar with bilingual and second language teaching methodologies and multicultural education teaching strategies to work with culturally and linguistically diverse learners in their own classrooms. New York State certified teachers in Childhood 1–6 can get the Early Childhood Extension by completing two early childhood development courses and passing the CST Multi-Subject: Teachers of Early Childhood (Birth–Grade 2) exams (211/212/245). The Middle School Certification enables adolescent teachers with initial certification to extend their certification to grades 5 and 6. Childhood teachers with initial certification may pursue the certification in a particular subject area (i.e. English, history, math, science, social studies) in grades 7–9.

Attention all teachers: If you have your master’s degree in education and secondary certification in a content area (e.g., social studies, math, English, science), you can obtain your New York State Certification as a Secondary Special Education Generalist with a Content Area Specialist extension. Graduates from this program will gain a rich understanding and in-depth knowledge of the practices to masterfully engage students of all learning styles and abilities.
