This program has STEM designation which includes benefits such as an extension for international students and a competitive edge in today鈥檚 job market

The Discovery and Development of New Drugs and Therapies

The BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences program is a dynamic and interdisciplinary one that aims to integrate fundamental principles of natural, physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry, and biology to understand how to synthesize de novo medicine, to optimize its delivery to the human body, and translate this integrated understanding into new and improved therapies against human disease.

Science-oriented Research Field, Driven by Pharmaceutical Sciences

  • Acquisition of analytical and ancillary laboratory techniques and skills employed in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Knowledge of regulatory issues related to drug discovery from bench-top to clinical development and marketing
  • Greatly enhanced opportunities for success in pursuing medical and other STEM doctoral programs

Take Courses Like

The BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences entails a unique combination of chemistry and biology courses and constitutes the prerequisite courses for graduate schools (including Pharmacy school). As a student, you learn the common language of pharmaceutical sciences through rigorous core coursework, with electives tailored to specific interests in cell and molecular biology, synthetic and macromolecular chemistry, physiology, pharmacology, and pharmaceutical sciences related research projects.

Sample courses include:

  • PHS 200 Fundamentals of Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • PHS 232 Bioanalytical Chemistry & Instrumentation
  • PHS 300 Pharmaceutics
  • PHS 310 Pharm Manufacturing and Regulations

Opportunities and Experiences

You have the opportunity to work side-by-side with distinguished faculty conducting research that at other institutions is usually experienced at the graduate level, as well as co-publish and present such research at regional and national conferences.

The Student Honors Chemistry Club of the American Chemical Society, Tri-Beta Biological Society, and Sigma Xi provide you with academic, scholarly, and experiential learning peer support.

Other opportunities include internship placements in local and national corporate research and development, government institutions, and summer training programs nationwide.

Choose Your Career

Federal and State employment opportunities for chemical biology are growing. In addition, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is rapid job growth in STEM majors especially for Chemical Biology in pharmaceutical, healthcare, cosmetics, forensics, teaching, research and development, and manufacturing.

Career Options

The BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences program provides you with the background for further post-baccalaureate study in pharmaceutical science or admission into professional schools for pharmacy, medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine (MS, PharmD, MD, PhD).

You can also work as a professional in research and development laboratories in the fields of pharmaceutical sciences; in production or quality control in a laboratory or production line, as well as assist pharmacists, chemists, and engineers to put more efficient methods of production and testing into practice.

This degree can also provide you with the formal educational preparation to be successful in employment in sales and marketing sectors of the pharmaceutical industry.
